The demonstration occurred near Zalod town in the tribal-dominated district, where villagers cited issues such as crop damage, waterlogging, and lack of alternate roads caused by the expressway project. Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) AK Bhatia and other officials intervened, assuring the villagers that their grievances would be addressed, prompting them to call off their protest.
"A survey of 14 affected villages in Zalod taluka has been conducted to assess property and crop losses due to the expressway construction," Bhatia told reporters. He assured the villagers that the government is committed to resolving their issues and meeting their demands.
The villagers alleged that the construction had led to waterlogging, damaging crops and homes in the area. They demanded compensation for these losses, along with additional measures, including construction of alternate roads and bridges, repair of damaged internal roads, restoration of electricity and drinking water supplies, and compensation for uprooted trees. They also called for the construction of a new crematorium to replace one demolished during the project.
Protest leader Mukesh Dangi expressed frustration over the lack of action despite repeated assurances. "We have been fighting for justice for three years. Surveys were conducted earlier, but no steps were taken afterward. We stopped the construction today to highlight our plight," he said.
Dangi added that the protest was suspended following the SDM's promise to convene a meeting of stakeholders on Thursday to address their concerns. However, he warned, "If the government fails to meet our demands, we will resume our agitation on Friday."
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, spanning 1,350 km, is an ambitious eight-lane project aimed at improving connectivity between the two major cities. While it promises to boost infrastructure and economic growth, the project has also sparked tensions in affected areas, with villagers demanding fair compensation and restoration of essential services.
Officials reiterated their commitment to resolving the villagers' concerns, seeking a balance between development and the welfare of local communities.
