Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin refuted claims made by opposition members questioning the government’s handling of the case, urging them to provide any evidence to the Special Investigation Team (SIT) that is investigating the matter.

While addressing the State Assembly on Wednesday, Stalin mentioned the ongoing investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a student at Anna University in December 2024. He stressed that attempts to politicize the issue for short-term gains would not succeed.

“If you really have evidence, please give that to the SIT that is investigating the case. Don't indulge in cheap activities for short-term political benefits. This government has an iron fist on crimes against women. With this one incident, many are trying to show that women are unsafe. Definitely, this won’t work among people,” Stalin said.

“This government has only one intention that it will stand with the victim to get justice legally. After the crime, if the accused was not arrested immediately or if the accused was saved, the government could have been blamed. Even after arresting the accused within a short period of time and collecting evidence, blaming the government only has political benefits,” he added.

The Chief Minister also responded to the opposition’s attempts to highlight the university involved in the case. “Members have spoken here by mentioning one University’s name. But I don’t want to mention that name and don't want to defame that name,” he stated. “No one can accept what happened to a student in Chennai. Sexual assault on a student is cruel.”

Stalin expressed his belief that most lawmakers had shown genuine concern over the case, with only one member using it to criticize the government. “This government has only one intention, that it will stand with the victim to get justice legally,” he said.

A row erupted in Chennai after a 19-year-old student was sexually assaulted inside the campus of Anna University, a premier technical varsity. The case has led to protests by opposition groups. On Monday, members of the AIADMK Students’ Wing were detained by police after attempting to stage a protest at Anna University. The group had planned to distribute black bands to students and the public to show support for the victim and to demand justice.

AIADMK Students' Wing secretary Singai G Ramachandran, one of the detained protesters, condemned the arrest and questioned the government's actions. “Why are they afraid of black bands? Who is that Sir, the arrested man had purportedly referred to?” he asked, as police took him into custody.

Skipper Harmanpreet Singh (13th, 32nd minutes) netted a brace en route his sixth goal in the Games so far and his 26th of the year, while Abhishek gave India the lead in the 12th minute.

The AIADMK, led by its general secretarybetkubi online casino, has been holding statewide protests since the incident, calling for the arrest of the real perpetrator. While one individual has already been arrested in connection with the assault, the AIADMK and its supporters continue to demand further accountability and justice.
